  9.  AB    ISSUE/PROBLEM: In the second decade of the AIDS epidemic, Puerto Rico is
  10.        using poetry, humor and science as an effective integrated strategy to
  11.        deliver AIDS prevention messages to the general population. DESCRIPTION
  12.        OF PROJECT: A Puerto Rican book of poems discusses condom use, fidelity,
  13.        love and hope to deliver AIDS educational messages. A poetic spectacle
  14.        was prepared based on the book. A group of popular artists, theater and
  15.        television stars participate in the show that includes poem recitals,
  16.        acting, pantomime, corporal expression and music. Information capsules
  17.        are presented throughout the show by a group of health educators of the
  18.        San Juan AIDS Institute (SJAI), presenting scientific data about HIV and
  19.        AIDS to the public. RESULTS: The SJAI uses this program in high schools
  20.        and universities, pubs, discoteques and shopping malls. The general
  21.        population, including the media, has supported the program strongly,
  22.        acknowledging the need for open discussion of condom use. LESSONS
  23.        LEARNED: AIDS campaigns based on fear failed as effective education
  24.        strategies. This program entertains, educates, raises awareness and
  25.        unites science with poetry and education with the arts.
