AB ISSUE/PROBLEM: In the second decade of the AIDS epidemic, Puerto Rico is
using poetry, humor and science as an effective integrated strategy to
deliver AIDS prevention messages to the general population. DESCRIPTION
OF PROJECT: A Puerto Rican book of poems discusses condom use, fidelity,
love and hope to deliver AIDS educational messages. A poetic spectacle
was prepared based on the book. A group of popular artists, theater and
television stars participate in the show that includes poem recitals,
acting, pantomime, corporal expression and music. Information capsules
are presented throughout the show by a group of health educators of the
San Juan AIDS Institute (SJAI), presenting scientific data about HIV and
AIDS to the public. RESULTS: The SJAI uses this program in high schools
and universities, pubs, discoteques and shopping malls. The general
population, including the media, has supported the program strongly,
acknowledging the need for open discussion of condom use. LESSONS
LEARNED: AIDS campaigns based on fear failed as effective education
strategies. This program entertains, educates, raises awareness and
unites science with poetry and education with the arts.
